The story behind the foundation

http://www.clitarheroes.com/

This foundation was set up to honour and remember Krista Michelle Simms. Krista passed away of cervical cancer on March 12, 2010 at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Millwoods at the age of 31. She left behind many friends and family, including her husband JP and 3 young children; Jorjia, Jace and Connor. The name “Clitar Heroes” was created by Krista in 2009 for her team that participates annually at the “Underwear Affair for Cancers Below the Waist”. In her memory we are raising money to renovate a patient room in the Palliative Care Unit 43 at the Grey Nuns’ Hospital in Millwoods where Krista spent time in 2009 and 2010. Our vision and goal is to re-create a “home away from home room” one at a time; in Unit 43 at the Grey Nuns Hospital. The first one will be the Krista Michelle Simms Room. Most people, when faced with a life-limiting illness prefer to remain at home. When the progression of disease causes complications that become difficult to manage, in many cases, staying at home is not an option. So was it with Krista.

In memory of Krista Michelle Simms, we are working together with the Caritas Foundation. The staff and nursing team already provide high-quality palliative care. Our vision is to enhance the rooms, one at a time, by making the rooms look less clinical. We would like to provide a larger bed so that a mother and her child could spend the night together cuddling. As well, for couples to sleep together, providing comfort to the ill and lessening their fears, knowing and feeling, that someone is close by, alleviating the fear of dying alone. Our vision also encorporates a professionally designed and decorated room accommodating an oversized lounger & ottoman, duvets & pillows in soft comforting colours; a dresser and large padded memory board to place favourite pictures and personal mementos brought from home. We would also like to ensure that the patient has access to Skype on a flat screen television screen enabling them to communicate with loved ones who are unable to visit. Everyone knows what a traditional hospital room looks like. The Krista Michelle Simms Room will be anything but traditional. The Krista Michelle Simms room will provide a warm, peaceful and tranquil environment. We are anticipating the cost to be approximately $25,000 to $35,000 per room.
